Grocers are ramping up sales and promotions in an effort to out-discount one another, according to an article by Tracy Turner in Thursday's The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch.

Turner writes that 16.8 percent of everything sold by U.S. food, drug and mass merchants during the year that ended Feb. 21 was on sale. That figure is up from 15.5 percent in the previous year.

One popular sale -- which I have not seen at my favorite grocery store -- is 10 for $10 deals, which Turner says Meijer and Kroger are offering. Giant Eagle is offering more buy-one-get-one-free offers and Wal Mart is posting more price-rollback signs, she says.

Such sales work to the advantage of grocers, according to Turner's article, because grocery shoppers tend to buy more than the sale items.

As I say frequently in this column, perhaps it's an idea you can borrow for your store. Adjust it to fit, then use it.
