Apr. 8--Once an exotic extra for techno-geeks, Wireless Internet connections are becoming a must-have for coffee shops, late-night eateries and other businesses that are finding a wireless connection is key to connecting with new customers.

Many shops offer the connection, commonly called WiFi, free of charge. Others see it as a new revenue stream. Either way, places to log on to the Web through a laptop computer are expanding as is the demand for free, or at least low-cost, connections to the Internet.
