LSI Logic Corporation, a leader in multimedia processing for the Digital Home, introduced its second-generation, single-chip DVD recorder system processor based on the company's successful
"LSI Logic has been a leader in this new and rapidly growing market since its inception, with its previous generations of processors already designed into numerous DVD recorder models," said In-Stat/MDR Senior Analyst Michelle Abraham. "The success story continues with the second-generation, single-chip DVD recorder processor that provides manufacturers additional opportunities to increase market share. With the DVD recorder total available market expected to grow to 9 million units in 2004, manufacturers need to be ready today with full-featured, cost-effective solutions."
The DMN-8602 leverages the industry-leading integration of the DiMeNsion 8600 (DMN-8600, the industry's first single-chip DVD recorder solution) that has been designed into consumer products from customers such as Apex Digital, JVC, Lite-On IT, LG Electronics, Samsung, and Zenith. DMN-8602 further integrates an NTSC/PAL TV encoder and a USB controller, and requires only a single unified memory subsystem. The integration of these functions into a single chip reduces design complexity and provides system designers with a considerable savings on the overall bill of materials (BOM). The DMN-8602 reduces up to $20 in system costs compared to the previous-generation, which was already an industry leader, having enabled $399 and $299 DVD recorder price points in 2003.
"LSI Logic has been the leading DVD recorder enabler by bringing its single-chip design with unique features to top-tier consumer electronics manufacturers," said Timothy Vehling, senior director of marketing of Consumer AV Products for LSI Logic's Broadband Entertainment Division. "DVD players have experienced significant market success, having shipped over 180 million units since 1997. We believe that with products with the enhanced features and reduced costs enabled by the DMN-8602, the DVD recorder market is poised to follow the market success of the DVD player."
Furthermore, the integration of the complete audio and video systems, CPU, and graphics engine onto a single chip makes DMN-8602 one of the most comprehensive and cost-competitive DVD recordable solutions in the market today.
LSI Logic's Broadband Entertainment Division provides innovative digital media processing and silicon solutions to industry-leading, worldwide consumer electronics manufacturers.
