Target Tops Wal-Mart on Most Admired Companies List

This year Minneapolis-based Target Corp. surpassed Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Bentonville, Ark., on Fortune magazine's 25th annual Top 20 Most Admired Companies list. Target placed at No. 13, while Wal-Mart fell to No. 19 from No. 10 last year. To create the top 20 for its rankings, Fortune and its survey partners at Hay Group asked 3,322 executives, directors and securities analysts to select the 10 companies they admire most. Having fresh ideas and being green are among the qualities that distinguish this year's winners. The following retailers placed in the top 20: Starbucks (No. 2), Apple (No. 3), Target (No. 13), Nordstrom (No. 15), Costco Wholesale (No. 18) and Wal-Mart (No. 19).
