September chain store sales were up 4 percent year-on-year, according to an International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) survey of 71 retailers. High gas prices actually helped wholesale clubs, who led the retail pack with a 10 percent category increase, said Michael Niemira, ICSC's chief economist
and director of research. Teen apparel stores rose 9.7 percent, and luxury stores saw same-store sales increase 5.3 percent. "Although the September sales performance was relatively consistent with its year-to-date trend, consumers continue to worry about high fuel expenditures, reducing nonfuel spending," said Niemira in a statement. Below is a summary of the September financial results for some major U.S. retailers.
