September sales round-up

According to the research department of the ICSC (International Council of Shopping Centers), September same-store sales were up a mere 2.4 percent in September, compared to a 5.9 percent gain last year. Factors contributing to the weak results included the hurricanes in the South, a soft back-to-school

season and unseasonably warm weather, said Michael Niemira, chief economist and director of research, in a statement. The ICSC further reports that drugstores had overall gains of 7.1 percent, wholesale clubs gained 6.6 percent, discounters gained 2.5 percent, specialty store sales were flat (except for the Gap, which posted a decrease) and department stores dropped 0.7 percent. Below is a summary of the September financial results for some of the major U.S. retailers, in descending order from best to worst. Figures used are comparable store sales. Percentages reflect changes from September 2003 comparable store sales.

American Eagle Outfitters Inc.: Up 23.3 percent
The Children's Place Retail Stores Inc.: Up 12 percent
Target Corp.: Up 5.6 percent
Wal-Mart Stores Inc.: Up 2.4 percent
Federated Department Stores: Up 0.1 percent
