Cement shortage threatens construction industry

A serious shortage of cement, that began in Florida and is spreading to other states, is threatening to slow the U.S. construction boom. In 2003, the United States used 112.3 million metric tons of cement; close to 19 million of those were imported. In addition to Florida, the shortage is slowing construction

starts in South Carolina, Texas and Louisiana. Charlie Sunderland, CEO of Ash Grove Cement Co., predicts his company will be sold out of cement sometime this year. The cement shortage, caused by rapid construction growth in China and by shipping congestion, adds to the existing issues of price increases for other construction materials, such as wood and steel. Ed Sullivan, an economist for the Portland Cement Association, told The Wall Street Journal, "Given how big construction is, it can have an impact on overall economic growth."
