Census reveals that the complexion of America is changing

The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that the U.S. population will total 420 million in 2050, an increase of 50 percent from today, and the non-Hispanic, white majority is expected to decline to 50.1 percent of the total, barely the majority. Both Hispanic and African-American populations are expanding more

rapidly than previously anticipated. However, the fastest increase is expected to be among Asians. The Asian population is projected to increase by 213 percent to 33.4 million by 2050, or 8 percent of the total. Hispanics, who became the nation's largest minority group last year, are projected to increase by 188 percent to 102.6 million, or 24 percent of the total. African-Americans are expected to increase to 61.4 million, an increase of about 70 percent, representing 14.6 percent of the total. Gregory Spencer, chief of population projections at the Census Bureau, says, "The basic trends have not changed. The population is becoming much more diverse."
