Flu season boosts Walgreen's Q1 profit

Drugstore chain Walgreen Co. has reported a 10 percent rise in quarterly profit as the onset of the winter flu season heightened demand for drugs and pharmacy sales. The Deerfield, Ill.-based company said net profit rose to $254.9 million in the fiscal first quarter ended Nov. 30, from $231.6 million

a year earlier. Sales for the quarter also increased 16.5 percent to $8.7 billion, with comparable-store sales jumping 11.9 percent. U.S. health officials said last week that this season's flu outbreak has now hit nearly every U.S. state, with deaths from pneumonia and influenza growing to an epidemic level. Walgreen's prescription sales surged 18.7 percent in the quarter, while pharmacy same-store sales jumping 14.7 percent.
