Wal-Mart named top U.S. furniture retailer

Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has been announced as the top U.S. retailer for furniture sales by Furniture Today magazine, edging out the previous top furniture seller, Seffner, Fla.-based Rooms To Go. Wal-Mart sold $1.24 billion in furniture in 2002, up 14 percent from 2001, and

is the first nonconventional furniture store to be ranked No. 1. The giant discount retailer is also No. 1 in sales for groceries, sporting goods, toys and DVDs and is fast encroaching in the footwear and electronics categories as well.
