Holiday sales results provide mixed forecast
The results are in from this year's retail performance during the all-important holiday shopping season. In the discount category, Big Lots Inc. reported a 10.1-percent rise in same-store sales for December, while a few retailers showed lackluster increases in same-store sales including Wal-Mart Stores
Inc. (+3.3 percent) and The TJX Cos. (+1 percent). Target Corp's same-store sales for the five weeks ended Jan. 4 fell 0.3 percent, a slightly narrower decline than expected. In the department store category, J.C. Penney was the shining star with a reported 4.7-percent rise in same-store sales, a higher increase than expected. Many department stores posted decreases in December same-store sales, including May Department Stores (-4.7 percent), Sears, Roebuck & Co. (-4.6 percent) and Saks Inc. (-2.1 percent).
