Wal-Mart, Kmart to halt ads on 9/11

Discount retailer Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Bentonville, Ark., and Kmart Corp., Troy, Mich., will suspend all television and radio advertising on Sept. 11, 2002, to honor the tragic events only a year earlier. Kmart has placed tribute ads in memorial editions of several daily newspapers today, including

The New York Times, The New York Post, The Washington Post and The Daily American in Somerset, Pa., near the site of the fourth plane crash. Wal-Mart plans to suspend all ads completely today. "Stores will be open as usual," said a Wal-Mart spokesman. "The goal we've set for ourselves is to have a quiet day of reflection." Both retailers will air the nation's live memorial services on television monitors in their respective electronics departments.
