August same-store sales disappointing for retailers

A disappointing back-to-school season resulted in lower-than-anticipated August sales for many retailers. Discounter Wal-Mart Stores Inc. reported an increase in same-store sales of 4.3 percent but reported sales as "sluggish." Target Corp. reported a 0.1-percent drop in August same-store sales, and

May Department Stores fell 8.6 percent. Sales were lower than expected for many department store retailers, with Sears, Roebuck & Co. posting an 11.1-percent drop and Federated Department Stores falling 5.8 percent. Kohl's Corp. sales rose 4 percent, but were less than the expected gain of 6.1 percent. Perhaps the biggest story may be J.C. Penney Corp. Inc.'s success with a 2.9-percent rise in August sales--beating its anticipated increase of 2.1 percent.
