Ahold's Argentina operations spur net loss

Zaandam, Netherlands-based grocery retailer Royal Ahold N.V., has reported its first net loss in years as a result of charges related to its Argentina operations. The company posted a loss for the quarter ended Aug. 3 at 197.5 euros ($194.6 million) compared with last year's gain of 323.8 million euros.

The loss includes an 80 million euro write-down for the devaluation of the Argentine peso, and a 410 million euro charge related to the default of former joint-venture partner Velox Retail Holdings.
