Atlantic City boardwalk gets Monopoly makeover

Million Dollar Pier, the 900-foot-long historic landmark in Atlantic City, N.J., that inspired the popular board game Monopoly, will soon be transformed into a Las Vegas-style themed retail and entertainment complex based on the game. Las Vegas-based Park Place Entertainment Corp., the casino company

that owns the pier, and the pier's lessee, Gordon Group Holdings, New York, have announced plans to begin the $80 million project in early 2003, with a tentative opening for spring 2004. The three-level, 280,000-sq.-ft. retail outlet will be renamed Park Place on Broadway and will feature familiar icons and elements from the game throughout the complex.
