Wal-Mart foregoes plans for Denver store

After massive protesting and complaints from Alameda Square Shopping Center merchants that Wal-Mart would be bulldozing down their locale to make way for a discount supercenter, the nation's largest company has opted to shelve plans for the $33 million Denver store. The merchants posted anti-Wal-Mart signs in their store windows and gathered hundreds of petition signatures to solidify their protest. In other Wal-Mart news, the company will close six of its 95 supermarkets in Germany, according to a report in WirtschaftsWoche, a German business weekly. The head of Wal-Mart's German operations, Kay Hafner, refused to comment on the information in the report.
