The Concretes

On their self-titled debut, Swedish dream-pop collective the Concretes deliver a wonderfully peculiar work that sounds immediately familiar and unlike anything else on the rock landscape today. The female-fronted eight-piece intertwines the lo-fi sensibilities of early Velvet Underground ("Say Something

New"), a fondness for Belle & Sebastian-like twee ("Seems Fine") and the ethereal style of Mazzy Star ("Chico"). The album has a lazy-Sunday-morning vibe: Songs slowly unfurl behind a wall of organs, droning guitars and muted horns. Meanwhile, frontwoman Victoria Bergsman channels Hope Sandoval with her drowsy, echoed delivery. While the songs have a tendency to run together with an overall sameness, the album as a whole is greater than its individual parts.—BG
