'Love' At First Sight
A galaxy of stars lend a hand to "True Love," the latest album from reggae legends Toots and the Maytals. Due this week via
V2, the collection sports guest appearances by Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, Eric Clapton, Ryan Adams, Jeff Beck, No Doubt, Phish's Trey Anastasio, Bootsy Collins, Ben Harper and Keith Richards, among others.
"It was nice to show that I have many different ways of doing my music," Toots (real name: Frederick Hibbert) says. "It's good that it was permitted to be done this way, because everybody is like one big family. They know my style, they love my songs, they have my record at their home."
Clapton is featured on two cuts: the Clash-popularized "Pressure Drop" and "Funky Kingston," on which Collins also guests. Nelson's "Still Is Still Moving to Me" is the lone cut not previously associated with Toots, having appeared on the former's 1993 Columbia album "Across the Borderline."
Other artists that contributed to "True Love" include the Roots, Bunny Wailer, Shaggy, Rahzel, Ken Boothe, Marcia Griffiths, Terry Hall, the Skatalites and Rachael Yamagata. Toots and the Maytals are on tour in North America this spring.
