Train Tops California Music Awards

San Francisco-based rock act Train took home several top honors at Saturday's 25th annual California Music Awards, including best album for the Columbia release "Drops of Jupiter." The band's lead singer, Pat Monahan, also won an award for outstanding male vocalist and the group, which led the field

with six nominations, took home the outstanding songwriter award.

No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani won the award for outstanding female vocalist, while the honor for outstanding group went to the award show's perennial favorites from San Jose, Smash Mouth. East Bay punk act Green Day, which made its mark in Oakland's warehouse district, won the artist of the year award.

Other winners included Los Mocosos in the Latin album category for "Shades of Brown" (Six Degrees) and Paula West in the jazz album category for her release "Come What May" (Hi Horse).

Southern California's Alien Ant Farm won awards for best hard rock/heavy metal album and best debut album for "Anthology" (DreamWorks). "I can't believe we beat Tool," said band member Terry Corso, referring to the band's rival in the hard rock category. "What up with that?"

Awards were handed out in 19 categories, with the winners determined by public vote via the event's official Web site. The ceremony at the Henry J. Kaiser Arena in Oakland, Calif., boasted performances by Smash Mouth, Sammy Hagar, Bob Weir, Joe Satriani, Papa Roach, the K.G.B., Mystic, and Mixmaster Mike.
