Beck Countersues Geffen

Beck filed a countersuit yesterday against Geffen Records, claiming the label has infringed on copyrighted material from the artist's 1998 release "Mutations." Billboard Bulletin reports that the action, filed in U.S. District Court in L.A., alleges that Geffen released "Mutations" -- originally earmarked as an indie-label release, and paid for by Beck -- without his permission, and has paid him nothing for it. A Geffen spokesman says the label does not comment on pending litigation.

On April 26, Geffen and indie Bong Load Custom Records sued the singer, claiming he had breached his contracts with them. Bong Load is not a defendant in Beck's countersuit.

"Mutations" peaked at No. 13 on The Billboard 200.
