Alternative-rock haven Sub Pop is the latest label to embrace MP3 technology. The Seattle imprint has struck a deal with digital downloader MP3.com to offer a rotating batch of the label's songs for free download on www.subpop.com and www.mp3.com. Initial selections will include tunes by Saint Etienne ("Sylvie"), Combustible Edison ("Laura's Aura"), the Murder City Devils ("I Want A Lot Now [So Come On]"), and the Pernice Brothers ("Overcome By Happiness").
Sub Pop gained notoriety in the late '80s with early releases by Seattle grunge staples Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Mudhoney, as well as national rock bands Afghan Whigs, L7, and the Reverend Horton Heat. In recent years it has signed acts that utilize lighter pop sounds and lo-fi aesthetics.
