Morissette, Mp3 Link; Amos To Join Tour?

Controversial Web site MP3.com is set to sponsor some dates of Alanis Morissette's upcoming North American tour. As part of the deal, the Maverick artist is expected to receive an undetermined financial stake in MP3.com, according to several sources.

In addition, Atlantic artist Tori Amos has been approached to appear on the tour with Morissette, according to a source. Atlantic Records and Amos' management declined to comment.

MP3.com's sponsorship of the Morissette tour comes as many music companies continue to shun the unprotected MP3 format in favor of the Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI), which aims to develop an industry-approved digital download music standard. Morissette is interested in reaching her fans through the technology, despite the concerns of the music industry, according to a source.

Executives from Maverick and its parent company, Warner Music Group, held an emergency meeting Friday to discuss the development, which is expected to be formally announced in the next few days.

While a source says that MP3.com is aiming to include MP3 downloads from Morissette on the site, no specific plans were in place at deadline.

A spokeswoman for Maverick Records says the label currently adheres to Warner Music Group's "30-second rule," which prohibits artists from placing song samples online that exceed that time period.

Spokesmen for Warner Music Group, MP3.com, and Morissette declined to comment.
