The Little Willies

Norah Jones gets in touch with her inner honky-tonk woman on the self-titled debut of the Little Willies, a cover-happy side project cheekily named after Willie Nelson. In the studio, Jones and musical friends, including Richard Julian and Lee Alexander, distill the fun, down-to-earth spirit of their

live shows. Fred Rose's revved-up country swing "Roly Poly" sets the stage with smooth vocals, brushed drums and killer guitar licks courtesy of Jim Campilongo. Jones bathes in piano glitz (Elvis Presley's "Love Me") and gets tipsy on Nelson's "I Gotta Get Drunk," but sparks fly when her honeyed verve blends with Julian's sandpaper vocals on the poignant "No Place to Fall." Still, with such outstanding musicianship, couldn't these guys have taken more risks than writing a song about Lou Reed and the questionable practice of cow tipping? —Sven Philipp
