  • Feb. 21: Hey, Hot Shot Contest Deadline

    The Jen Bekman Gallery in New York is seeking entries for its winter Hey, Hot Shot competition. Ten winning photographers will be featured in the gallery's Hey, Hot Shot 2006 Winter Showcase and will be eligible to be a finalist for the Hey, Hot Shot annual, which includes representation by Bekman through 2007.

    The entry deadline has been extended to Tuesday, Feb. 21. Details are available at the Hey, Hot Shot web site


  • Feb. 22: Health Insurance Seminar In New York

    A seminar in New York aims to teach photographers how to manage their heath insurance.

    "Navigating the Health Insurance Maze: Learn How to Design a Cost Efficient Health Plan for Your Business" is a free seminar by Aaron Schindler, a financial advisor with Wealth Advisory Group (and a former photo agent) and Margo Rossi of Weston Group Benefits.

    The seminar is scheduled for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22 at the Wealth Advisory Group office at 888 7th Ave. in New York. Seating is limited and participants must register by Feb. 17. Call (212) 261-1897 or e-mail aschindler@wagroupllc.com.


  • March 10 to April 23: Fotofest in Houston

    FotoFest 2006: The Eleventh International Biennial of Photography and Photo-Related Art takes place from March 10 to April 23 in Houston.

    The festival includes exhibitions, gallery openings, portfolio reviews, print auctions, workshops, lectures and other events around the city. A film series and a dance are also planned.

    More than 100 independent spaces, including galleries, museums and restaurants, are hosting exhibitions. FotoFest is organizing 20 exhibitions relating to two themes: "The Earth" and "Responding to Violence."

  • March 23 to 26: ASPP Conference In San Francisco

    The American Society of Picture Professionals is hosting its 4th Education Conference and Portfolio Reviews in San Francisco from March 23 to 26.

    The event will include seminars and presentations on software, news photography, licensing, digital asset management and other topics. Photographer Douglas Kirkland is the keynote speaker. New this year, editors and publishers will be available for 30-minute portfolio reviews for an additional fee.

  • March 26 to 31: Palm Springs Photo Festival

    Connect 06, the first Palm Springs Photo Festival, is scheduled for March 26 to 31 at the Korakia Pensione Hotel in Palm Springs, Calif.

    The festival lineup includes presentations from experienced photographers, exhibitions, workshops, portfolio reviews and other events.

    Connect 06 was created by Hossein Farmani, who also created the International Photography Awards (the Lucie Awards) and Focus on AIDS, and photographer Jeff Dunas. More information is on the Palm Springs Photo Festival web site.


  • March 31: Hurricane Katrina Documentary Fellowships Deadline

    The Open Society Institute is accepting applications for a series of one-time fellowships that support media projects addressing the response to Hurricane Katrina.

    OSI expects to award 12 to 15 Katrina Media Fellowships, each worth $15,000 to $35,000, for projects in print, radio, photography or film and video. The institute is looking for projects that examine race and class inequalities in the Gulf Region or lessons learned from the government response to the disaster.

    The application deadline is Friday, March 31. More information is available on the Katrina Media Fellowship web site.


  • April 6 to 8: PACA Conference in Chicago

    The Picture Archive Council of America is holding its annual meeting and conference from April 6 to 8 in Chicago.

    Seminars on licensing, digital imaging, stock, rights and clearances and other topics are scheduled. The event will also include programs co-sponsored by PictureHouse Chicago and the Midwest chapter of the American Society of Picture Professionals.

  • April 8: ASMP Marketing Lecture In Portland

    The American Society of Media Photographers Oregon is hosting a lecture by consultant Leslie Burns-Dell'Acqua called "New Treatments for PMS (Panic Marketing Syndrome)" on April 8 in Portland. Burns-Dell'Acqua will also offer private consultations at a discounted rate for ASMP members on April 7.
