Recent visitors to Manhattan's Port Authority have been greeted by images by
George Rodger, Constantine Manos and
Martin Parr beaming down on them from a 1,300-square foot digital billboard.
The billboard is owned by SmartSign Media, a company that partnered
with Magnum Photos to provide photos and historical essays throughout the month of January. Starting Jan. 27, the sign will begin showing work from Magnum's photographers in Iraq in preparation for the run up to Iraqi elections. Recent work from
Thomas Dworzak and never-before published daily life photos from Baghdad by
Ilkka Uimonen will be included.
More than 1.5 million people pass by the sign each day, according to
Mark Lubell, director of Magnum's New York office. He says he's currently looking for sponsorship that would allow Magnum to display different photo edits throughout the year.
Earlier this month Spike Lee and his brother, photographer David Lee, edited a selection of civil rights-era photos from the Magnum archive that ran on Martin Luther King Day. Other edits by
Ilkka Uimonen & Paolo Pellegrin,
Alex Webb & Susan Meiselas, Eugene Richards and
Bruce Gilden have presented various takes on the state of the world according to Magnum.
If you can't make it to 8th and 42nd, the photo essays can be viewed at
