West Wing Photographs
The White House Historical Association is looking for images for an exhibition celebrating the centennial of the West Wing.
In 1902 President Theodore Roosevelt completely renovated the White House and moved his executive staff from an overcrowded second floor office suite to a "temporary office building." It was called the Temporary Executive Offices, but soon was enlarged in 1909 and again in 1934. During the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt, the building took on the essential architectural character it has today, and the name "West Wing" came into common usage.
The association wants photographs that "depict the history of the West Wing as the workplace of democracy." For example, images that capture significant moments of decision making in American history, or simply behind-the-scenes images of the president and his staff at work. Any West Wing image from 1902-2002 are welcome. Go to www.whha.org for the downloadable forms.
