New York September 11 by Magnum Photographers, published by powerHouse Books, goes to the Smithsonian. The exhibition, which opened on May 3, will show until June 30 at the Smithsonian Arts and Industries Building at 900 Jefferson Drive S.W., in Washington, DC.
On display will be a selection of 37 images from the book ? a group of black-and-white and color photographs by Steve McCurry, Susan Meiselas, Larry Towell, Gilles Peress, Thomas Hoepker, Alex Webb, Eli Reed, David Alan Harvey, Paul Fusco, Bruce Gilden and Chien Chi-Chang. There is Meiselas' image of pedestrians running from falling debris, McCurry's image of a collapsing tower, and Towell's picture of a minister staring at ground zero.
"People all across the United States and the world watched history unfold in the most devastating way on September 11," says Ellen Dorn, director of exhibitions. "No matter where we were that day, we were all touched and we were all wounded...The photographs in this exhibit help us to grasp the enormity and the depth of the devastation that day in New York."
This exhibition, which started at the New-York Historical Society last year, will travel to other U.S. venues after it closes at the Smithsonian. Check out www.si.edu or call Visitor Information at (202) 357-2700. Read more about the book at www.magnumphotos.com or
