The Sports Illustrated team of photographers and editors are getting a "good work out" producing its Winter Olympics daily and regular weekly magazine, says picture editor Jim Colton. "Things have turned out the way we expected, that is, high volume of film, short turnaround, and meeting
deadlines."
Although photographers shoot digitally when needed, there is a C-41 set up, and most of the images are still done on transparency or negative film. "There have been two real crunches for us so far, and one more to come, that is when we have to close the daily and also meet the needs of the weekly, which always wants to wait until the last minute possible to get in the latest breaking news," Colton explains.
Besides the 11 SI photographers, others from the Salt Lake Tribune and Duomo, whose work is syndicated through Corbis, and Stephan Matzke from Newsport have also contributed to the daily. The hard work's been paying off. There are many photo driven features, and a top photo each day in the daily magazine. On Day 12, the magazine produced a three-page spread of a motion blur study of athletes. Photographer Lynn Johnson also did a seven-page black-and-white essay on murals on downtown buildings.
