The November issue of Details scores a scoop with a story and unusual photo spread on OJ Simpson in Miami.

Details decided to do the story because the writer, Anthony Haden-Guest, had access to OJ Simpson, says Alice Rose George, the director of photography at the magazine.

The result is an insightful story and unusual images of Simpson.

George says she chose Juergen Teller, who is known for his fashion work, because "Juergen Teller has a great way of taking a situation, tossing all the elements, and ending up with a unique cocktail. He has a way of shooting that looks off-the-cuff, but it isn't."

The magazine is trying to use photographers less predictably, she adds. "When a photographer is chosen who normally shoots, say fashion, and is assigned to shoot sports, you can get some pretty interesting results. This stretching will result in, one hopes, a new way of seeing the familiar."

The four images accompanying the story were picked because they went with the story pacing, George explains. There is rhythm to the images, starting from the first picture of Simpson with his hands over his face to the last picture, of him leaning back and throwing his hands up. The second picture, of Simpson staring into the camera with his hands on his lap, is George's favorite. "I think that's an incredibly insightful picture," she says. "Look at his eyes, his hands, the position of his body. The body language tells me so much about this person."

Juergen Teller, through his London rep Katy Baggott, declined to be interviewed.
