TORONTO -- The Canadian Federal Court in Toronto on May 31 ordered Computer Warehouse Outlet to pay copyright levies on nearly 400,000 blank CD-Rs.

The judgment for CAN$83,664 ($67,038) against the Toronto-based outlet resulted after a 2004 audit by the Canadian Private Copying Collective, a nonprofit organization that collects and distributes blank-media levies to songwriters, publishers, performers and labels.

The audit revealed that 398,400 CD-Rs were imported and distributed by the outlet without payment of the required levy set under the Canadian Copyright Act.

The court also ordered payment of interest equal to CAN$0.21 ($0.17) per CD-R.
