TORONTO (The Hollywood Reporter) -- Canadian cablecaster Shaw Communications on Feb. 14 launched a phone service in Calgary using Internet technology, becoming the latest cablecaster here to fend off competition from dominant phone giants by bundling TV signals with phone and Internet services.

Shaw's entry follows rival Groupe Videotron Ltd. last month launching its own voice-over-Internet protocol phone service in Montreal as Canadian cablecasters bid to compete with domestic phone giants by offering "triple play" cable, phone and Internet access packages.

Calgary, Alberta-based Shaw Communications said it had priced its digital phone service at CAN$55.00 ($44.75) per month when bundled with Shaw's existing cable and high-speed Internet access offerings.
