Vivendi Universal plans to introduce copy-protected CDs next month. "With the extent of piracy and the extent of CD-burning that's going on, we have no choice but to try and further protect our artists and our rights-holders," says vice chairman Edgar Bronfman Jr. He would not say who is providing the
technology or how it will work, except to note that it will take into account varying local laws on burning.
Meanwhile, Vivendi has released profit figures for the first half of 2001. Universal Music Group had operating income of euros 234 million ($204.2 million), vs. euros 187 million ($163.2 million) in the same period last year. As previously reported, revenues rose 2% to euros 2.98 billion ($2.6 billion) (Bulletin, July 24). Overall, Vivendi had first-half net income of euros 22 million ($19.2 million). Despite an expected economic slowdown, Vivendi?which derives just 1% of revenues from advertising?expects to meet its 2001 growth targets of 10% for revenue and 35% for cash flow.
Vivendi shares closed yesterday down euros .89 at 49.
