Universal Music Group (UMG) is teaming with publisher Penguin Putnam to offer online and CD-ROM instructional guides on how to break into the music industry, featuring first-hand accounts from established artists and executives. The venture, to be announced today, is called "InsideSessions" and was jointly
conceived by UMG chairman/CEO Doug Morris and Penguin Putnam president/CEO Phyllis Grann.
The first title, "From Demo to Deal," features commentary from Elton John, Sting, Sheryl Crow, Shaggy, Enrique Iglesias, Fred Durst, Nelly, and Godsmack, as well as Sony Music chairman/CEO Thomas D. Mottola, Interscope Geffen A&M chairman Jimmy Iovine, producer Glen Ballard, songwriter Bernie Taupin, and Def Jam founder Russell Simmons. Topics discussed in the program include what makes a good song, recording and submitting a demo, who does what at a record company, and how to get a music publishing and label deal.
The learning programs are available at insidesessions.com for $69.95 each, and online content is supplemented with CD-ROMs. The company will also offer separate DVD and home video products and plans to develop books, CDs, and television programming. Additionally, InsideSessions is working to make the course material available at the UCLA extension program.
