Int'l Standardization Body OKs CISAC Song ID System

The Geneva-based International Organization for Standardization has approved a system of identifying musical works on a global basis. The system, the International Standard Musical Works Code (ISWC), was developed by the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC). It "tags" every song, symphony, and jingle with an identifying number that establishes proper title, author, and composer.
The system has the capacity to recognize more than 1 billion musical works through a decentralized database?developed by ASCAP?that incorporates records culled from CISAC's 195 member organizations. CISAC officials hope ISWC will simplify procedures that allow copyright-holders to monitor the use of their material, regardless of medium, and keep track of royalties due. CISAC implemented the system in 1996 with Abba's "Dancing Queen"; more than 2 million ISWC numbers have been issued to date. Ultimately, the society aims to register 80% of the worldwide music repertoire with an ISWC number; a search engine is scheduled to be online by the end of the year.
