PassAlong Networks next month will offer its entire catalog of independent music in open MP3 format, removing the Windows digital rights management protection that the catalog had previously used.

PassAlong is a digital music service that allows members to earn points

for sending tracks to friends who choose to purchase them. About 2 million tracks in its catalog will convert to the open MP3 format in 30 days.

Behind the offer is a new technology PassAlong developed called "freedomMP3," which it says applies a "reasonable amount of rights management" to the open format files.
