Warner Music Australia has signed what it says is the first licensing deal for an Australia-based label to cover transmission of music over the Internet. Terms of the deal, with recently launched Web radio group InterActive Media Network (IAM), were not disclosed. Warner, which is said to have insisted that IAM stations play a minimum of 20% Australian content, has begun negotiations with some of the other 12 Australian online radio broadcasters.

IAM, which went public in April, began talks with record companies in December 1999. It is due to launch its first station, bigfatradio.com, on June 19.

Australia has no legislation covering royalties on digital broadcasting, despite lobbying since 1994 by the Australian Record Industry Assn. The bill is in review in the Senate; observers say it may become law by November.
