Jay Berman, chairman/CEO of the IFPI, and Jack Valenti, chairman/CEO of the Motion Picture Assn. (MPA), signed a landmark agreement yesterday to share resources in the fight against optical disc piracy.

Says Berman, "We've found that any one time, pirates could be producing

movies or could be producing recordings. We're fighting exactly the same group of increasingly sophisticated people, and it's products for export?it has been globalized."

Says Valenti, "We sat down with our top people all over the world and said, IFPI can do a better job in certain countries and MPA can do a better job in some other countries. So rather than doubling resources in places ... we decided to pool them."

In addition, President Clinton and Ukraine president Leonoid Kuchma announced yesterday a detailed plan to combat CD piracy in the Ukraine. The Ukraine, cited last February by the U.S. trade representative as a major pirate country, has already closed several illegal CD plants, and will introduce legislation that would strengthen its piracy laws.
