Sony Pays Publisher For Alleged Violations

A music publisher who asked not to be identified told Bulletin that the company has received payment from Sony Music Entertainment for alleged copyright violations on recordings manufactured in the U.S. and distributed in Latin America (Bulletin, Jan. 13).

royalty collection firm the Harry Fox Agency (HFA), in a memo sent Jan. 10 by its lawyer to its publisher clients, said it was prepared to take legal action over the alleged violations, which centered on free distribution and promotional use, discontinued merchandise, and other claims. HFA said Sony sent recordings without obtaining proper licenses from the agency or its clients.

Regarding the matter, Edward P. Murphy, president/CEO of the National Music Publishers' Assn./Harry Fox Agency, told Bulletin: "We settled an audit with Sony a while back that affects hundreds of publishers." He declined further comment, citing a confidentiality agreement.
