Scour Still Up And Running Despite Major Layoffs, Suit

In spite of laying off 80% of its workforce, Scour says it will continue to operate and will fight the copyright-infringement lawsuit filed against it by the RIAA and the Motion Picture Assn. of America (Bulletin, July 21). On Friday, the privately held multimedia file-sharing company pink-slipped 52

of its 64 employees, leaving only the five founders and a handful of engineers to keep the Beverly Hills, Calif.-based Web site running.

In a statement, Scour president/CEO and co-founder Dan Rodrigues blames the lawsuit for drying up investment sources, forcing the layoffs. Comparing the 3-year-old Scour to "David," Rodrigues says, "We remain hopeful that our dispute will come out the same way that the original David and Goliath battle did." Both sides are scheduled to meet with the U.S. District Court judge Oct. 20 to update the court on the progress of the case.

Scour is in its third round of financing; initial funds came from Michael Ovitz's Yucaipa Cos.
