MySpace Launches In France
MySpace has quietly launched its first non-English version in France.
A disclaimer on the site at fr.myspace.com explains that the French version is in development, and many of the current artist pages are still in English. MySpace representatives were unavailable to comment at press time.
The social networking space is becoming increasingly crowded in France. On June 28, leading French TV channel TF1 launched WAT (We Are Talented), a Web site openly positioned as an alternative to MySpace. TF1 is expected to start a heavy publicity campaign for it in September.
National hip-hop radio Skyrock, which claims more than five million "Skyblogs," is another potential competitor, though its service is not specifically focusing on music.
MySpace announced this week that it had signed up its 100 millionth member worldwide. CEO Chris de Wolfe in June said the service was eyeing-up expansion in Europe, with 11 countries targeted.
A German version is tipped to follow France. De Wolfe said he was looking at China and India in the longer term.
