Hit Songwriter Robert Allen Dies

Robert Allen, co-writer of hits that helped launch the careers of Johnny Mathis and the Four Lads, died Oct. 1 in Quogue, N.Y., after a long illness. He was 73.

Allen's hit songs with lyricist Al Stillman in the late '50s and early '60s included "Chances Are" and "It's

Not For Me To Say" by Mathis and "Moments To Remember" and "No, Not Much" by the Four Lads. Among others who recorded his songs were Doris Day (who introduced "Everybody Loves A Lover"), Perry Como, Tony Bennett, Billie Holiday, and George Shearing. Allen also co-wrote the perennial "(There's No Place Like) Home For The Holidays" and was a pianist on the New York jazz circuit.
