The Virgin Entertainment Group's (VEG) launch of its v.shop chain in the U.K. completes its first phase today with the opening of its 97th store, in Chichester, south of London. The retailer began closing outlets in its under-achieving Our Price group of 229 music stores some three months ago for conversion into v.shops. The new stores offer a broader range of consumer electronics products alongside a chart-oriented music and video selection, plus kiosks offering online shopping. VEG is investing some £20 million ($28.4 million) in the redevelopment.

Having completed phase one, the chain expects to "confirm details for the second phase of the company's development in early 2001," says Chris Ash, v.shop/Our Price managing director.
