Singapore-based digital rights management service provider MERCURiX has forged a non-exclusive agreement to digitally distribute BMG product in the Asia-Pacific region, including Japan. It is believed to be the first such deal involving a major label in Asia.

Specifically,

BMG has signed a letter of intent to appoint MERCURiX affiliate Zeus Digital Assets Services to represent the record company as an agent for digital wholesale distribution. BMG has also named the Singapore Telecommunications subsidiary?a licensee of InterTrust Technologies Corp.?as a "preferred clearinghouse" and supplier of technology to support the purchase of digital downloads. The deal follows BMGand MERCURiX's cooperation in the Project Zeus download trial earlier this year (Bulletin, June 26).

Major chains such as Tower Records and HMV are developing regionwide online strategies to distribute BMG tracks in Asia, says Rosemary Tan, regional manager of Web development and online commerce for BMG Entertainment Asia Pacific. BMG will launch the initiative in Australia at Christmas by releasing 2,500 digital tracks through participating retailers' Web sites.
