The Roots have formed a label, Okayplayer Records, in partnership with multimedia design/entertainment firm Decon. Distribution is by RED. The label derives its name from the group's popular okayplayer.com Web site.

Roots drummer Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson will executive-produce the label's first release, a compilation featuring the Roots, Skillz, Jean Grae, Dilated Peoples and others. The album, due this summer, will also include two unsigned acts; the label is accepting submissions until Feb. 13.

The Roots' "Phrenology" (MCA) is up for a Grammy for best rap album. The group is currently recording follow-up "The Tipping Point" for Geffen. The Roots previously operated the Motive imprint through MCA.
