Greece's finance ministry, at the urging of the music industry, is taking action in the war on piracy. The ministry is pledging to investigate large storage and distribution centers suspected of housing pirate-CD manufacturing operations, and to propose a tax of five euros ($5.80) on every blank CD.
Deputy Finance Minister Kimon Koulouris has also called for a meeting next week of the ministry's fraud squad, to discuss plans to investigate buyers of large quantities of blank CDs.
A delegation comprising IFPI Greece president Panos Theofanellis, recording artist Yiannis Kotsiras, Minos-EMI managing director Miltos Karadsas, songwriter/producer Yiorgos Theofanous and others met with Koulouris last week to ask him to join the ministries of public order, culture and justice in the fight against piracy.
The pirate-CD market in Greece is estimated to be worth 150 million euros ($174 million) per year.
