SunnComm Technologies says it is testing a "secure-burn" technology that will hinder consumers from making copies of burned CDs. The Phoenix-based company says it hopes to make the technology commercially available by the end of the year.

Existing digital rights management

technology can dictate the number of copies made of CDs or commercial downloads. However, there is currently no way to restrict copying of a file that has been burned to a blank disc.

"We will be able to reduce the number of copies made from copies," says SunnComm president Bill Whitmore.

The announcement comes on the heels of a report that SunnComm's CD "copy management" technology can be bypassed on a Windows PC by holding down the "shift" key (Bulletin, Oct. 8).
