Echo, the planned digital music service backed by a consortium of leading retailers (Bulletin, Jan. 27), is hoping to launch in the first quarter of 2004, Bulletin has learned.

Echo CEO Dan Hart says the L.A.-based company is currently in licensing negotiations with

the major labels. Hart maintains that despite the current rush to market by a number of digital music services, downloads and subscriptions will not be a mass-market proposition for PC users until next fall.

Borders, Best Buy Co., Hastings Entertainment, Tower Records, Trans World Entertainment, Virgin Entertainment Group and Wherehouse Music are equal shareholders in Echo.
