Radio Continues To Step Up For Katrina Victims
Radio is stepping up in a big way to support those devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Personalities, stations, syndicators and owners have cleared their plates to lend a hand.
Clear Channel stations are airing PSAs directing listeners to www.StormAid.com where they can make a donation to the American Red Cross. In addition, Clear Channel Entertainment is in the process of organizing benefit concerts and collection drives.
Syndicated morning man Kidd Kraddick and his listeners raised over $270,000 dollars on Aug. 31, after announcing that all of his future events will be dedicated to raise funds for hurricane relief. "We were originally going to raise money for Kidd's Kids Day, but after seeing the news coverage, there is a greater need today," he said on-air.
Through Labor Day, listeners of Salem's religious teaching KKLA, Christian KFSH (the Fish) and N/T simulcast KRLA/KTIE Los Angeles are being directed to a toll-free number at Feed the Children where donations are being accepted.
Saga AC WSNY (Sunny 95) Columbus, Ohio morning team Dino & Stacy are conducting a 30-hour radiothon to raise funds for the Red Cross relief effort. The station's entire staff will man the phones to take donations.
ADX Communications country WYCT (Cat Country) Pensacola, Fla., has started Operation Open Heart/Open Home, a program designed to match Katrina refugees with locals who are willing to open their homes to those stranded in the area.
Meanwhile, Clear Channel adult top 40 KIOI (Star 101.3) San Francisco morning man Don Bleu broadcast from a local restaurant to raise money for the Red Cross. The restaurant offered a discounted breakfast for those who donated. The station is also directing listeners to local blood banks and auctioning off a chance to meet Ricky Martin to raise funds.
Clear Channel top 40 WJJS (Jammin) Roanoke-Lynchburg, Va., and its sister stations are holding a water drive for storm victims. While the initial goal was to pack a 48-foot semi, the station reports that three semi trucks and a moving van have been filled. The station has also collected $5,000 in cash donations.
