Universal Music Group has won a "cybersquatting" case over the domain name geffenrecords.com. The administrative panel of the Geneva-based World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) ruled recently that Brenda Michelson, a recording artist from Sherman Oaks, Calif., had registered and used the domain

name in bad faith, and ordered it transferred to UMG.

The domain name was found to be "confusingly similar" to UMG's Geffen Records label. Although Michelson was not seen as a competitor of Geffen, WIPO declared that she lacked rights or legitimate interest in the domain name.

UMG had alleged that, since April 2000, the domain name had defaulted to an "under construction" site. Furthermore, Michelson recently renewed her registration for the domain name despite apparent repeated attempts by UMG to contact her.
