Details have emerged on Strummer Recordings, the Universal-distributed label run by former Capitol president Gary Gersh that was first announced last year (Bulletin, March 19, 2002). Strummer is being 100% funded by Universal Records and is based in Beverly Hills, Calif., according to a source. The label
is in the process of appointing a staff.
Strummer's first release, due June 24, is the debut effort from the Mars Volta, "De-Loused in the Comatorium." The label has also signed New York act the Rapture, which will release a set in the fall, produced by the DFA (Primal Scream, Radio 4).
In making the deal for Strummer, the source says, Universal Music Group chairman/CEO Doug Morris and Universal Records president Monte Lipman also agreed to "give some funding" to GSL Records, the hardcore label run by Mars Volta member Omar Rodriquez. Universal-distributed GSL has released albums by the Locust, Le Shok, and !!!.
